Britten Sinfonia Workshop
5th April 2012
Britten Sinfonia join forces with Manor creative talent!
Musicians from the world famous Benjamin Britten Sinfonia worked with a range of students from The Manor School – mostly with limited experience of music – to compose and perform a number of original works. This culminated in a joint performance by the students and musicians from the Sinfonia. The quality was impressive given the fact that most of this was produced in less than a day. Students were enthralled by this experience and learned a great deal from the process. Some have been inspired to compose their own music. Principal, Ben Slade, stated “Our young people have learned such a lot from the discipline of music over the last few days. Music took me to places a working class lad would never normally go and I owe a great deal to my school for making this happen. It is great that our students are now being given this fantastic opportunity to explore different styles of music and to work with such high calibre professionals. Huge thanks to Cambridge University Press for enabling this to happen and to the Britten Sinfonia for inspiring the students.”

7th February 2012
The Manor Silver Young Ambassadors (YA) attended training at Netherhall School on 17 January 2012 with the other YAs from the Cambridge School Sports Partnership.
They started off with an indoor rowing relay challenge. They were divided into 4 teams and had to row the distance of 2012m. This was followed by an Olympic quiz completed in pairs.
They were then introduced to their role as a Young Ambassador and heard what other YAs had done. Alice talked about her journey from Silver Ambassador to being chosen as a torch bearer for the Olympic Torch Relay.
There were various inspirational Olympic and Paralympic video clips played and other ideas about assembly presentations. YAs were then shown the Get Set website with all the resources available.
The next highlight was the guest speaker Dave Southby. Representing his country in the British Olympic Judo team for a period of 10 years, Dave won a Commonwealth Gold medal in Auckland in 1990 and won numerous other international competitions. He explained how he had been involved in many different sports at school and then took the opportunity to get involved in judo at university.
Free Schools Meals Registration
17th December 2011
Free Schools Meals Registration We are aware that in Cambridgeshire there are a large number of pupils who are eligible for free school meals but who have not registered. This means that families in poverty are missing out on their entitlements, and also that schools in Cambridgeshire are missing out on funding that they could be receiving through the Pupil Premium.
In 2009 (the latest figures available) there were 16,455 children living in poverty in Cambridgeshire. Around 60% of them are of school age, and should therefore be eligible for FSM. This equates to 9,873 children. There are currently 7049 children registered for FSM in Cambridgeshire. This means that Cambridgeshire schools are missing over £1,200,000 this year in additional funding through the Pupil Premium to support their most disadvantaged children.
Parents do not need to complete a paper form. Applying for free school meals online is quick and easy, and no proof of entitlement is needed. On receipt of the on-line application, Cambridgeshire County Council will check for entitlement through a secure Electronic Checking System. All that is needed is the claimant's name, National Insurance number, their children's details and details of their children's schools.
Schools will want to support their families to apply. They can do this by publicising the importance of registering, and by providing access to a computer with clear instructions on how to register. These instructions are attached with this email. They can be printed out and sited with any parent or community computer access point. Schools office staff will also want to be aware of this, so that they can support any parents who are not confident with literacy or computer use.

26th September 2011

A Cambridge secondary school is set to halve its water use and significantly reduce bills.
The Manor foundation school in Arbury Road is now rolling out the first phase of its energy improvement plan.
The plan is the brainchild of Mike Walters, a teaching assistant at the school. A passionate 'green' champion, Mr Walters compiled a comprehensive analysis of the school's energy needs in his own time.
He said: "I wrote it as I feel that it makes both environmental and fiscal sense to utilise resources that will always be required, such as water and electricity, in the most efficient manner possible."
Thanks to help from Araceli Gorretas, Water Saving Co-ordinator at Cambridge Water, the school will now be fully kitted out with devices such as tap inserts*, shower valves* and 'hippos*'.
Conservative estimates show that the collective fitting of all the devices will save the school 967 litres of water per day - the equivalent of 3,651 cups of tea!
The Manor is also giving a free "hippo" to every student and staff members after Cambridge Water offered a further 600 of the water-saving devices.
Ben Sale, Principal of The Manor, said: "I am delighted that we are doing something tangible to save energy. Mike's work in this area has been fantastic!"Top Manor Student Leadership Roles Announced!

Hannah Smart
The much-improved secondary school is pleased to report continuing success:
The % of students getting five or more passes at A* to C = 61%
The % of students getting five or more A* to C grades, including English and Maths = 48%
Among the success stories was 16-year-old Hannah Smart of Chesterton (pictured) who has won a £37,000 scholarship to study A-levels at one of the UK's leading independent sixth form colleges CCSS (Cambridge Centre for Sixth-Form Studies). Hannah said: "I absolutely loved being at The Manor and I'm really looking forward to starting my A-levels now." Hannah is hoping to study law after completing her A-levels.
Ben Slade, Principal at The Manor, said: "In the context of three years of record results and significant improvement, results this year are pleasing. We have managed to almost equal performance at five higher grades, including English and maths. Naturally I had hoped for better. That said, maintaining the school's best results in a quarter of a century is not easy especially when the Government requires schools to record students "educated other than at school" against their results statistics despite the fact they have not taught the students for years! If this was not the case, our results would be well in to the 50s".
With a record number of students starting at The Manor in Year 7 in September, a restructured workforce and a first-rate teaching team in place, Ben is confident that further records will be broken next year. He added: "I want to wish all of our students the very best for their future lives and careers and to thank my staff for their hard work and support."
The Manor is a small community-based school in open and spacious grounds. With around 450 students on roll from September 2011, staff are able to give close personal attention to every student while still providing a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum. The Manor School's Non-Negotiable Rules

20th July 2011
Michael Gove has decreed that schools in England are now to be measured according to how many students achieve grades A* - C in five core subjects - maths, English, two science qualifications, a foreign language and either history or geography.
This is in addition to the long-standing benchmark of the proportion of students gaining grades A*-C passes in maths and English GCSE and three other unspecified subjects, which could be vocational or GCSE courses.
The new measure, which was published this year for students who took exams before it was announced, has divided opinion.

18th July 2011
Golf, football, ultimate Frisbee, athletic events, tennis, football rounders, basketball and cricket were on the timetable for schoolchildren thanks to sports leaders at Cambridge Regional College.
The students organised an action-packed multi-sports festival at The Manor for 100 Year 5 children from King's Hedges, Grove and Shirley Primary Schools.
Rob Metcalfe, sector leader for Sports Studies at CRC, said the students had done a superb job organising activities for the schoolchildren, who all had a fantastic time.
"We had 20 Higher Sports Leaders at the events, as well as around 90 students who were spending a taster week with us before starting College in September and who were training for their Community Sports Leader qualification," he said.
"The pupils really enjoyed the sports events and it was a fantastic and very rewarding experience for the students who organised the days. It was also very valuable for our new students, who were able to learn to lead before coming here."
When the school children were leaving one of them said "Can we do that again?".

\\\"The youth of today are our future: but to enable them to take their rightful place in the world they need encouragement to achieve their individual and collective potential.
The Manor epitomises education at its best - students are at the heart. Their horizons are expanded, they are given opportunities to fulfil their potential and they experience the standards and boundaries that will enable them to take their rightful place in both society and their communities as first class responsible citizens.
The Manor staff and students are to be congratulated on their achievements to date and deserve and require our continued support on their journey of continuous improvement.\\\"Julie Spence: A brief biography
18th July 2011
Julie Spence OBE QPM DL BEd LLB MA MBA, Patron
After taking her \'A\' Levels Julie spent four years at Liverpool University and I M Marsh College of Physical Education where she trained to teach PE and Biology. She moved to the West Country to take up a teaching post but soon discovered teaching was not for her.
Consequently in 1978 she joined Avon and Somerset Police and was posted to South Bristol. After a period of service, which included postings to CID, community policing , the force communications centre, the Family and Child Protection Unit, the Press Office and uniform operations, she was seconded to the Association of Chief Police Officers secretariat in London for two years as a Temporary Chief Inspector.
On returning to Avon and Somerset Julie undertook a number of operational roles before being promoted to Superintendent and posted to North Bristol. She is an advocate of life- long learning and during her career continued her personal development and consequently undertook part-time and distance learning degree courses in law, police studies and management.
In 1999 she was appointed to Assistant Chief Constable for Thames Valley Police, where she held the Corporate Development portfolio. She took over the Territorial Policing portfolio in January 2003.
She was appointed to Deputy Chief Constable for Cambridgeshire Constabulary in April 2004 and was responsible for Operational Policing for the County.
On 1 June 2005 Julie was appointed Acting Chief Constable and subsequently appointed to Chief Constable on 10 December 2005.
In the Queen\'s 80th birthday honours list she was awarded an OBE for her management of complex and contentious organisational issues, leadership of Thames Valley\'s contribution to the operations to protect Heathrow and the Queen Mother\'s funeral, her work for the ACPO Terrorism and Allied Matters Committee on Royalty and VIP Protection and her strong leadership and determination in taking forward the Gender Agenda and the development of the British Association of Women in Policing (BAWP) , which have both become major drivers for gender equality in British policing. She was President of BAWP for 10 years (2000 - (2010).
Maximising people\'s potential and delivering first class public services are her main drivers; consequently she took on the National lead for improving the Police Services relationship with citizens and was at the forefront of ground breaking cultural change.
In 2008 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Anglia Ruskin University: then in the 2010 New Years Honours list she received the Queens Police Medal (QPM).
Finally in September 2010, after a 32 year career, she retired from policing. She is now pursuing a portfolio career and rebalancing her work/life balance equation! Her new responsibilities include being Chairman of the Police Mutual Assurance Society and a Commissioner for the Press Complaints Commission. She remains committed to the county and has been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant to support the Lord Lieutenant in his important county role.An overwhelming response
4th July 2011
When writing a blog for Cambridge News Online you have to be prepared for certain newsworthy themes contained therein to be picked up by the Cambridge News itself.
However, I could not have predicted the enormity of the response to my comments about North Cambridge and Arbury. The depth of feeling and support was overwhelming. To this end, I would like to thank education correspondent, Suzan Uzel, and the Editor of the Cambridge News for having the courage to make this controversial issue "front page news".
I would also like to thank the people who have contacted me over the last few weeks. It has certainly sparked a really positive debate about why the north of Cambridge city is still the victim of prejudice in 2011. The Letters pages throughout the week of publication and the week following also supported the fact that this is a serious issue which needs proper debate and a way forward.

22nd June 2011
The former chief of Cambridgeshire Police is to be Patron of a city secondary school.
Julie Spence (OBE QPM DL) has taken on the top role after several visits and meeting with students at the Arbury Road foundation school.
Mrs Spence said: "Thanks to strong leadership and dedicated staff, the school has made fantastic progress. Ofsted has already reported The Manor as 'good with outstanding capacity to improve further' and it will be great to be part of its development and continued success."
Mrs Spence was Cambridgeshire's Chief Constable for five years from 2005. During that time, she made national news headlines over demanding more officers due to the rise in immigration. In 2006, she won the prestigious Champion Award for her commitment and achievement in her role as a gender champion.
Mrs Spence, who retired from Cambridgeshire Police in 2010, is now Chairman of the Police Mutual Assurance Society and is a Commissioner for the Press Complaints Commission. She remains loyal to Cambridgeshire and has been appointed Deputy Lieutenant to support the Lord Lieutenant.
She added: "The Manor epitomises education at its best - students are at the heart. Their horizons are expanded, they are given opportunities to fulfil their potential and they experience the standards and boundaries that will enable them to take their rightful place in both society and their communities as first-class responsible citizens."
Ben Slade, Principal of The Manor, said: "Julie is a terrific role model for all of our students. She will contribute a great deal to the leadership of the school and she is certainly not afraid to speak out. We are absolutely delighted that she is on board."
Since 2007, the school has seen many improvements. As well at its recent positive Ofsted report:
- GCSE results have more than doubled
- The number of parents/carers expressing a preference for a place in Year 7 at The Manor has now more than doubled

'The Greatest Show on Earth' - Young Ambassadors - 2012 Assemblies
4th May 2011
As part of their role the two Young Ambassadors prepared an assembly with Mrs Fidler (SSCo) to promote the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
We planned this to coincide with the 500 day countdown to the Olympics (15 March) which was also when tickets went on sale.
The assemblies have been presented at Manor as well as the feeder Primary Schools King's Hedges, Shirley, Orchard Park and Grove.
We started with a video clip of previous Olympic Games 'Games Greats' as an introduction.
Mrs Fidler then presented some interesting numbers, facts and figures such as the size of the facilities (the dining hall will be the size of 3 football pitches and will seat 5,000 people) and the number of shuttlecocks that will be used (1,100).
Charlotte prepared a PowerPoint presentation about the history of Olympic Games (in the Ancient Games only men could take part and they all performed naked!) and then highlighted 2 Olympians - Tom Daley (diving) and Shanaze Reed (BMX).
We then showed the video clip 'Paralympics'.
Robert presented information about the history of the Paralympic Games (started in 1948 for WW2 veterans) mentioning former Paralympian, Tanni Grey-Thompson (wheelchair racing) and current Paralympian Ellie Simmons (swimmer). He then profiled Ben Rushgrove (100m running) who's interview on the website describes his achievements and daily training routine (gets up at 6:00am, attends lectures at university, trains for 3 hours in the evening).
Mrs Fidler then talked about the Olympic and Paralympic Values: respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration, equality. Top class athletes try to live according to these beliefs and ideas in order to be the best they can be.
We then finished with the video clip 'Values'.

4th May 2011
On Thursday 5 April 2011, the 25 sports leaders from Manor devised fun games and activities for 138 pupils from Yr 2 at King's Hedges, Shirley and Grove Primary Schools.
Multiskills activities are based on the basic skills of: Agility, Balance and Co-ordination
Agility combines balance, co-ordination and speed. The activities consist of starting and stopping, changing direction, twisting, turning and rotating.
Balance is a state in which your body remains reasonably steady and stable.
Co-ordination is the skilful and balanced movement of the body and its parts at the same time. This involves running, jumping, sending and receiving.

25th March 2011
Regarding the Manor School Year 10 student featured in the CBBC TV show: "My Life", the following article was extracted from the Thursday 24th March edition of the Cambridge First newspaper on page 22.
A Cambridge family highlight its battle with disability and bullying in a television programme. My Life - Big Brother on BBC Two on Saturday, featured brothers Ethan and Aiden Jones, their father Lee and mother Michelle, all from Arbury.
Michelle and Aiden, 10, have a form of dwarfism and rely on Lee and Ethan, 15, to help care for them. Because his father works shifts, Ethan's mother says much of the caring can end up falling to him.
And because his family look different, Ethan, who is now a Year 10 student at The Manor School, was severely bullied at a previous school. The Programme looked at how far he has come since starting at The Manor in January last year, and discussed the effect bullying had on the boys. Michelle said: "When we first approached about the filming I ummed and ahhed about it. I was loathe to exploit the family.
"But when we talked about it as a family we decided it would be good to show people what it's like and help discuss issues like disability and bullying. It's been good for Ethan too, he's got some attention where normally the focus might be more on his little brother." Ethan said: "I enjoy spending time with my brother, although I think he'd say I'm annoying. I'm definitely protective of him."CBBC TV Show 'My Life' features Manor Student!

14th February 2011
In a most imaginative and original display of Art, children and students of 14 Cambridge schools north of the river have used boxes, boxes and more boxes to show just how creative they can be.
Boxes are something that we all use every day and accessible to every child. But these are no longer ordinary boxes. There is everything from wonderfully ornate tiny trinket boxes to solid wooden boxes show-casing elaborate works of Art. Even ideas completely out of the box. The Exhibition demonstrates the achievements of children and young people through Art, and the collaboration of all the schools north of the river: Arbury, Brunswick, Castle, Chesterton, Colleges, Grove, Kings Hedges, Manor, Mayfield, Milton Road, Orchard Park, Shirley, St Lawrence and St Luke's.
The opening of the Art Exhibition is celebrated by a lively performance in drama by the Manor students, entitled "Out of the Box". Music is from Chesterton Community College Jazz Band " All Blue" and "Cantaloupe Island", and Milton Road Primary School playing "Chatterboxes" as a prelude to the Event whilst guests gather. The combined choir of all the Cambridge City primary schools north of the river will join together in a spirited rendition of "As one" and "Time". Esther Brassett from Chesterton Community college will play a Schuman piano solo while guests view the Exhibition.
The Celebration Event will be officially opened by Adrian Loades, Cambridgeshire County Council's Executive Director for Children and Young People's Services before an invited audience at the Manor School at 4.00pm on Monday 14th February. The Exhibition is open for all parents and carers from Tuesday 15th February to Thursday 17th February from 3.30pm - 5.00pm.

They learned more about their role as a Young Ambassador, registered on the London 2012 get set website and prepared a presentation that could be used for an assembly to promote the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
They were then introduced to Grace Clements who won a Bronze medal in the heptathlon at the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi. She talked about how she was inspired by watching Sally Gunnell in the hurdles. She brought her Bronze medal and several pairs of spikes that she used for the 7 events.

A city secondary school which was once deemed to be "failing" is now a "lovely place to learn". The Manor, in Arbury Road, Cambridge, has received its first Ofsted* inspection report since becoming a Foundation School last month. They concluded: "The Manor is a good school, and a lovely place to learn now, thanks to the excellent leadership of the Headteacher and the good work of his team of teachers and support staff."
Furthermore: "It has improved substantially and securely since the previous inspection, primarily through a relentless focus on driving up standards in English and Mathematics.
"Students, staff, parents and carers have much to celebrate, with students proud and pleased of how much better school life has become."
The Manor recorded record-breaking GCSE results for the third year in a row this summer with 60 per cent of students passing at least five subjects at grade C or above. It is a remarkable turnaround since the secondary school was deemed to be "failing" and was put in to special measures in 2004. Ben Slade, The Manor's Principal, said: "We are resolute in the pursuit of excellence and our goal is to see all our students achieving - and indeed exceeding - their target grades in an atmosphere of mutual respect, tolerance and positive behaviour."
Mr Slade became the youngest secondary school Headteacher in the UK when he was appointed in 2007 at the age of 30. He said: "I have received a huge amount of positive feedback from the local community and beyond. We are fiercely proud of our school and looking forward to the next stage in our development using our new Trust (comprising CRC, Ridgeons Group Ltd, CCSS, Cambridgeshire Local Authority, Kings Hedges Neighbourhood Partnership and Cambridgeshire Constabulary) as a vehicle for change."

Cambridge Children get their first taste of string instruments with world-class musicians
2nd July 2010
Children from Manor Community College and local Cambridge primary schools had a masterclass in string instruments from the Cambridge-based Britten Sinfonia last week.
A trio of Britten Sinfonia musicians Clara Biss (violin), Lisanne Melchior (viola), Ben Griffiths (double bass), together with workshop leader John Webb, taught the children how to hold their instruments, make different kinds of sound, and compose simple pieces.
At the end of the session the children performed with the musicians to an audience of teachers two pieces that they had composed during the day: a tango and some 'scary music', which accompanied a silent film about a boy walking in a spooky forest.
Sophie Dunn, Creative Learning Director at Britten Sinfonia said: "It was a real pleasure to work with the children as they embark on what we hope will be a fantastic journey into string playing. Our musicians are passionate about what they do, and it's great to be able to share this with a new generation of performers. What I particularly enjoyed about this project was the fact that, only a short while after first picking up their instruments, the children were able to join in a performance with the professional string trio, and experience the buzz of playing in a musical ensemble."
The workshop was supported by Cambridge University Press, a long-time partner of Britten Sinfonia. Heidi Mulvey, Community and University Relations Manager at the Press said: "Our staff have been doing some volunteering at Manor recently, and we were thrilled when we learned there might be an opportunity for the Britten Sinfonia to do some work there too. The way the children grew in confidence during the workshop was fantastic to see."
Benjamin Slade, Head teacher at Manor said: "I am absolutely thrilled that our year 7s and some Year 6 students from associated primary schools were able to be involved in such an exciting and high profile event. Students were enthralled by the session and in awe of the fantastic musicians, and the music director from the Britten Sinfonia. We are so grateful to Cambridge University Press for supporting this event which gave students the chance to access something special and raised their aspirations."
The children who took part in the workshop will all be carrying on with their instruments in the new school year, with weekly double bass lessons provided by Cambridgeshire Music as well as in-school violin and viola lessons.
