The study of Geography in today's classroom reflects its concern with environmental, social
and economic issues. Geography will always be about places but increasingly it is also about
the way that mankind interacts with both physical and built environments, changing those
environments at a local level through to the global level.
As students study Geography they will learn about different cultures and societies. This will
help them to realise how nations rely on each other. It can inspire them to think about their
own place in the world, their values, rights and responsibilities to other people and environments.
The department employs a wide range of teaching strategies to encourage and enthuse students of
all abilities enabling them to succeed through work that can be presented visually, orally or as
extended writing.
At GCSE students will study the OCR syllabus. There are many opportunities to develop ICT skills
as well as the more obvious geographical skills. The course offers staged assessment which means
that two of the exam elements can be taken in the first year of GCSE, allowing for retakes if
necessary and reducing the pressures on the final year.
