Inclusion and Special Needs
We have made Inclusion a central strand of life at The Manor. We recognise the needs of each and every student and seek to address these in the best possible ways as early as we can. We know that many students require a more personalised approach in order that they make good progress and we have put in place a team of professionals to provide just that.Barriers to learning are many and diverse and can include -
- English as an additional language
- Poor memory or concentration
- Low self esteem,
- Low expectations
- Poor reading/ listening skills
- Poor social /behavioural skills
- Physical, sensory or medical issues
- Lifestyle factors
- Neglect, abuse or disrupted home life
Having identified what needs to be addressed for the child to flourish, we commit to giving the level of support that is required. This can range from short term teaching assistant support to extra one - to - one teaching in particular subjects or the involvement of other services, such as youth workers, counsellors, parent support advisers, educational psychologists, occupational therapists and speech and language specialists.
For some students intensive, long term interventions for more severe or complex issues are provided. We have students benefiting from alternative timetables, intensive literacy /numeracy lessons, supported work in the Guidance and Support Centre and self esteem programmes.
We also believe that it is important to support the whole family and we offer parent counselling too. Some parents take our English as a Second Language classes to enable them to be more involved in school life.
Our students tell us that they feel secure and they know that their voice will be heard. They know where they can go to for support and that they will be taken seriously. As a lead school for Inclusion in Cambridgeshire, we are justifiably proud of the provision we have for the inclusion of all at The Manor.
